Pretty cool, right? But what exactly are the national merit scholarship requirements to make it through each stage?
National Merit Scholarship Requirements
To start on the road to a National Merit Scholarship, students need to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in October of their 3rd year (junior year) of high school. This single test score is used to determine entrants to the competition.

Commended Student

So how does one actually apply to be a National Merit Scholar? Let’s walk through the steps.
How to Apply for the National Merit Scholarships
Step 1) Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of your junior year. This is the essential first step to enter the competition. The PSAT has three sections: Reading, Writing & Language, and Math. Students receive a Selection Index score from 48-228 based on their performance.
