In short, if you’re accepted into this program, Stanford will cover:
- Tuition and fees
- Room and board
- Books and supplies
- Annual stipend for academic expenses ($3,100 annually)
- Summer quarter tuition
- Travel for academic expenses
They’ll even fork over an annual personal stipend of $19,400 for living expenses.
Let me put that into perspective:
Tuition and room+board at Stanford costs around $76,000 per year.
Add it all up over four years, and this scholarship has a total value of over $300,000!
To get selected for this unicorn of a scholarship, you’ll need:
- Blazing-hot grades
- Impressive leadership potential and civic engagement
- A well-articulated vision for solving global challenges through cross-disciplinary study
- To pass Stanford’s already competitive undergrad admissions
Phew. No wonder they only hand out 100 of these each year globally.
2. Australia’s Prestigious Insiders Scholarship
3,500 miles southwest of Nigeria lies Australia, home to the University of Sydney’s Insiders Scholars Program.
It’s one of the most generous international undergrad scholarships around, worth over AU$95,000 per year.
Here’s what one scholarship covers:
- Full tuition
- Health insurance
- Travel allowance
- Visa costs
- Living allowance
That living allowance works out to around AU$24,000 annually for room, board, books, and personal expenses.
And the cherry on top?
The University of Sydney has also earmarked over $1 million AUD for dedicated support services for Insiders Scholars.
These include academic advising, tutoring, social activities, the works. Talk about VIP treatment!
Unlike some of the other programs on this list, the Insiders Scholarship isn’t just looking at your grades. The app also considers:
- Extracurricular activities
- Leadership experience
- Community service
And of course, they expect you to be able to handle the academic rigor of Sydney Uni (no easy feat).
Interested? You’ll need to be admitted to an eligible bachelor’s degree program first.
3. Become A “Duke”…
While a student at Duke University in North Carolina, you could be living like royalty.
That’s because their Robertson Scholars Leadership Program provides selected international students with:
- Full tuition, room and board
- Paid domestic and international summer experience
- Health insurance
- All mandatory student fees
- Personal stipend
So how much is this actually worth?
For the 2022-2023 school year, this “full ride” adds up to a staggering $79,008 value.
Now, here’s where things get crazy:
Duke isn’t just looking for book smarts. They want the total package: academic achievement, leadership, and legit business skills.
For example, past Robertson Scholars have launched successful non-profits, worked at elite companies like McKinsey, and presented research internationally.
In other words: step your leadership game up if you want a shot at this.
Duke awards as few as 8 Robertson Scholarships each year to international students like yourself.
Tough odds, for sure. But the opportunity for a debt-free education from one of the U.S.’s elite universities might just make it worth it.
4. A STEM Scholarship With Full ‘Shrooms
As a Nigerian STEM student, you’ll definitely want to check out the University of Sussex’s International Science Scholarship.
With everything covered—tuition, room, board, flights, visa fees, and a living stipend—this scholarship is basically getting the full meal deal.
The living stipend rings in at £11,668 for the 2022/23 school year. Not too shabby at all.
Now, unlike some of the comprehensive scholarships I covered before, the International Science Scholarship is specifically for…you guessed it…STEM majors.
Which makes sense, considering the University of Sussex is known for its powerhouse Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computing, and Engineering programs.
Impressing them with your STEM skills and passion won’t be easy though.
Past recipients maintained near-perfect GPAs and demonstrated dedication to scientific research.
Some even completed special programs like the Debswana Scholarship, which allows top Botswana students to study in the UK.
Basically, you’ll need to bring your A+++ game.
The cool part?
Sussex automatically considers you for this scholarship once you apply to their STEM degrees. No extra application needed!
5. The Door to Oxford Could Be Unlocked For You
Okay, I saved one of the biggest opportunities for last:
Studying at the University of Oxford in the U.K. with fully-paid tuition, housing, travel, and living costs.
That’s what’s in store for the select few Nigerian students awarded the Alu Scholarship from Aluko & Oyebode.
To give you an idea of what this scholarship is worth, tuition alone at Oxford is £27,840 for most courses.
When you factor in housing, living expenses, flights, and visa fees, we’re easily talking over $75,000 per year.
So how does a Nigerian student earn this golden ticket?
Short answer: by being truly exceptional.
First off, you’ll obviously need to gain admission to Oxford, which only accepts around 17% of international applicants.

Competition is insane for these ultra-rare scholarships. But Oxford does award a handful each year.
Considering the prestige of an Oxford education and the zero-debt opportunity, it’s definitely worth the effort.
